Robert David Perceval-Maxwell DSO JP DL PC (Ire) (born 1870 – died 24 May 1932) was an important figure in British history. He was a brave soldier and a politician from the Ulster Unionist Party. This party worked to keep Northern Ireland as part of the United Kingdom. He also served in the Senate of Northern Ireland, which was like a parliament for Northern Ireland, and on the local council for County Down.

Early Life and Family

Robert David Perceval-Maxwell was the only son of John Perceval-Maxwell. His family lived at Finnebrogue House in Downpatrick, a town in Northern Ireland. He went to a famous school called Eton College, which is known for educating many important people.

A Soldier's Life

Joining the War Effort

When the First World War started, Robert Perceval-Maxwell played a big part in creating the 36th (Ulster) Division. This was a large group of soldiers from Ulster who fought bravely in the war.

Rising Through the Ranks

In September 1914, he became a Major in the 13th (County Down) Battalion of the Royal Irish Rifles. He had helped to form this very battalion! By December 1914, he was made the second-in-command, meaning he was the second most important officer in his group.

He continued to rise, becoming a Lieutenant-Colonel in November 1916 and leading a whole battalion of soldiers. Later, in May 1918, he commanded a battalion of the Royal Munster Fusiliers. During his time fighting, he was seriously wounded. He left the army in January 1919 after the war ended.

Political Career

Serving Northern Ireland

Robert Perceval-Maxwell was honored for his service and was appointed to the Privy Council of Ireland in July 1921. This was a special group of advisors. This honor meant he could be called "The Right Honourable."

He then served in the Senate of Northern Ireland from 1921 to 1925. In this role, he helped make important decisions for Northern Ireland.

Family Life

In 1895, Robert Perceval-Maxwell married Edith Grace Head. They had five sons together:

  • John Robert Perceval-Maxwell (born 1896)
  • Richard Henry (born 1897), who sadly died fighting in 1916 during the war
  • Patrick Edward (born 1900)
  • Brian Stephen (born 1908)
  • David (born 1911)

Later Years

Robert David Perceval-Maxwell passed away in 1932 at the age of 62. He died in a nursing home in Belfast.
