Robert E. Cooper Sr. (born October 14, 1920 – died July 10, 2016) was an important American judge. He served as a Justice on the highest court in Tennessee, called the Tennessee Supreme Court. He held this position from 1974 until he retired in 1990.
Cooper was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He went to college at the University of North Carolina and later studied law at Vanderbilt University.
Robert Cooper's Early Career
Before joining the Supreme Court, Robert Cooper Sr. had a long career in law. He was the leader of the Tennessee Judicial Council, a group that helps improve the state's court system.
Serving as a Judge
Cooper also served as a judge in other courts. From 1953 to 1960, he was a judge in the Sixth Judicial Circuit. This court handles cases in a specific area of Tennessee.
After that, he became a judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals. He served on this court from 1960 to 1974. This court reviews decisions made by lower courts.
Later Life and Family
Robert E. Cooper Sr. passed away on July 10, 2016. He was at his home in Signal Mountain, Tennessee. He had been sick for a short time before he died.
His son, Robert E. Cooper Jr., also became a very important person in Tennessee law. He served as the Attorney General of Tennessee from 2006 to 2014. The Attorney General is the chief legal officer for the state.
