Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Eures was a famous English cricket player who lived in the mid-1700s. He came from a place called Bexley in Kent, England. Robert played for teams from Kent and also for a special team called All-England. People knew him as a very good batsman. He often played in exciting games called single wicket tournaments, which were super popular back then and involved big prizes!

What Was Robert Eures' Cricket Journey Like?

Robert Eures first appeared in cricket records in a newspaper called the Daily Advertiser. This was on August 31, 1747. He played for Kent against the All-England team at a place called the Artillery Ground. Many of the best players of that time were in this important match.

In 1749, Robert Eures joined a really strong All-England team. They played against Surrey, which was the top county team that year.

Dartford's Big Challenge

In 1752, Robert Eures was chosen as one of the three main players for the famous Dartford Cricket Club. This club made a big challenge to "the rest of England"! Dartford said that with just three star players – William Hodsoll, John Bryant, and Robert Eures – plus eight other players from their local area, they could beat any eleven players from anywhere else in England.

This exciting match was supposed to happen on July 29, 1752, at Dartford Brent. Sadly, we don't know the result of this game. It might have even been called off because of rain!
