Early Life and Education
Robert Golob completed his advanced studies in electrical engineering at the University of Ljubljana in 1994. After that, he continued his research in the United States as a special scholar. He studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.
Career in Business
In 2004, Golob helped start an energy company called GEN-I. This company, which trades energy, is controlled by the state. He was the chairman of GEN-I until 2021.
Journey in Politics
From May 1999 to June 2000, Robert Golob worked for the government as a State Secretary. He was part of the Ministry of Economic Affairs. In 2002, he was elected to the City Council of Nova Gorica, a local government position he held for many years.
In 2011, Golob joined the Positive Slovenia party. Later, in 2013–2014, when there were disagreements within the party, he tried to help resolve them. In May 2014, he joined a new party called the Party of Alenka Bratušek (SAB). He became one of its vice-presidents. After the 2014 election, he focused more on local politics in Nova Gorica. He led a neighborhood assembly from 2010 to 2014 and remained a member until 2022.
In 2021, Golob decided to become more active in national politics again. This happened after his time as chairman of GEN-I ended.
Prime Minister of Slovenia (2022–2026)
In January 2022, Golob took over a smaller political group called the Green Actions Party. He then renamed it the Freedom Movement. In the 2022 Slovenian parliamentary election on April 24, 2022, the Freedom Movement won 41 seats. This gave them a strong position in the 90-seat National Assembly.
Golob formed a government by working with the Social Democrats and The Left parties. These parties share similar political ideas, often called "centre-left." Together, they had enough support to lead the country. On May 25, 2022, the National Assembly officially appointed Robert Golob as the Prime Minister of Slovenia.
His government approved changes to family laws in October 2022. These changes made marriage legal for all couples in Slovenia. This followed a decision by the country's highest court.
Domestic Policies and Changes
Government Ministries
When Golob became Prime Minister, he announced plans to create more government ministries. A new law about the government was approved in June 2022. However, some groups asked for a public vote, called a referendum, on this change. On November 27, 2022, voters supported the idea with 56.69% in favor.
The Golob government then put these changes into action a year later. Some existing ministries had their responsibilities updated. Three new ministries were also created:
- The Ministry of a Solidarity Future
- The Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation
- The Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy
With these additions, the government had 19 ministries and one special government office.
Healthcare System Goals
One of the main goals during Robert Golob's time as Prime Minister was to improve the healthcare system. A key objective was to change how supplementary health insurance worked, aiming to make healthcare more accessible for everyone.
Foreign Policy and International Relations
Middle East Relations
Golob's government expressed concerns about the situation in the Gaza Strip and the wider Middle East. They supported efforts for peace in the region. In May 2024, he announced that his government would recognize the Palestinian state. In July 2025, his government also took action against certain individuals, including Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.
Personal Life
Robert Golob has three children. He married Tina Gaber in September 2025 in Strunjan.
