Robert Edward Archibald Udny-Hamilton (born April 8, 1871, died October 26, 1950) was a Scottish soldier and a special kind of leader called a "representative peer." He was known as the 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton. He held the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the army.
Who Was Lord Belhaven?
Robert Edward Archibald Hamilton was born in 1871. He later changed his name legally in 1934 to Robert Edward Archibald Udny-Hamilton. He became the Lord Belhaven and Stenton in 1920. This title was passed down from his uncle. His uncle's son, Ralph, had sadly passed away during a battle in France in 1918.
His Family Life
Lord Belhaven was married twice. His first wife was Kathleen Gonville Bromhead. They got married on November 15, 1898. They had two children together:
- Julia Somerset, Lady Raglan (born 1901, died 1971). She married the 4th Baron Raglan.
- Robert Alexander Benjamin Hamilton (born 1903, died 1961). He later became the 12th Lord Belhaven and Stenton.
Kathleen passed away on December 1, 1935, at their home, Udny Castle. A few years later, Lord Belhaven married Sheila de Hauteville Pearson on March 25, 1938. They also had two children:
- Margaret de Hauteville Hamilton (born July 3, 1939).
- Victoria Edith Hamilton (born April 17, 1941).
A Soldier's Life
Lord Belhaven had an important career as a soldier. He reached the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army. He fought in several military campaigns:
- The Chitral expedition in 1895.
- The Tirah Campaign from 1897 to 1898.
- The Mesopotamia campaign from 1915 to 1918. During this campaign, his bravery was officially recognized.
After a long life, Lord Belhaven passed away on October 26, 1950, at his home, Udny Castle. He had been unwell for two years before his death.
