Sir Robert Harling was an important English landowner and soldier who lived a long time ago. He had a lot of influence and control over several villages in Norfolk, like East Harling, West Harling, Harling Market, and Larling.
He married Jane Gonville. Her father was a very important person who started a college that later became Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge University.
A Soldier's Life
Sir Robert Harling was a brave soldier. He died on September 9, 1435, while fighting in a very long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War. He was fighting alongside a powerful leader named John, Duke of Bedford. Duke John also died less than a week after Sir Robert.
After he died, his body was prepared in a special way so it could be taken back to England for burial. This was a common practice for important people who died far from home during that time.
Sir Robert is buried in the East Harling Church. You can still see his family's special symbol, called a coat of arms, there today.

Sir Robert Harling had a daughter named Anne. She married two important men during her life. First, she married William Chamberlain, who was also a soldier. Later, she married Sir Robert Wingfield. He was a Member of Parliament and worked for King Edward IV.
