Robert L. "Bubbles" Hawkins (born June 30, 1954 – died November 28, 1993) was an American professional basketball player. He was known by his nickname "Bubbles." He played as a shooting guard.

Robert Hawkins was chosen by the Golden State Warriors in the 1975 NBA draft. He was the 51st player picked overall. Hawkins played for four different teams during his four seasons in the National Basketball Association (NBA). He scored an average of 12.7 points per game. He also made 1.5 assists and grabbed 2.3 rebounds per game.

About Robert Hawkins

Robert Hawkins was married to Barbara Hawkins. They had two sons together. Their sons were named Robert Hawkins and Nathan Hawkins.

Playing Professional Basketball

Robert Hawkins started his professional career after being drafted by the Golden State Warriors. This happened in the third round of the 1975 NBA draft. He played in 32 games during his first year with the Warriors. He averaged 3.9 points and 0.9 rebounds in about 4.8 minutes per game.

The Warriors released him before the next season started. Hawkins then looked for a job outside of basketball. But in December, the New York Nets contacted him. The Nets were having a tough first season in the NBA. This was after the ABA–NBA merger, which brought teams from the American Basketball Association into the NBA.

The Nets needed more players at the guard position. This was because their star player, Julius Erving, had been sold. This sale happened due to the team's money problems. Hawkins quickly became a very important player for the Nets. He averaged 19.3 points per game. The Nets' coach, Kevin Loughery, even called him a "hero."

On February 7, 1977, Hawkins had his best game. He scored 44 points in a win against the New Orleans Jazz. During the 1977 NBA All-Star Game events, Hawkins played in a game of "horse." He lost to another famous player, Pete Maravich, in the first round.

However, Hawkins' time as a top player in the NBA was short. The Nets moved to New Jersey for the 1977–78 season. Hawkins played in only 15 games for them that year. He was released after some disagreements with the coach.

Hawkins got one more chance to play in the NBA. He signed with the Detroit Pistons before the 1978–79 season. But he only played in four games before being released again.

Later Life

Robert Hawkins passed away on November 28, 1993.
