Robert Hoadley Ashe (1751–1826) was an English Anglican church leader and writer. He was known for his work as a clergyman and for editing books.

Who Was Robert Hoadley Ashe?

Robert Hoadley Ashe was born around 1751. His father was a prebendary at Winchester, which means he was a senior clergyman connected to Winchester Cathedral. Robert went to Pembroke College, Oxford, a famous university in England. He earned several advanced degrees there, including a Master of Arts (M.A.) in 1793, and then a Bachelor of Divinity (B.D.) and Doctor of Divinity (D.D.) in 1794. These degrees showed his deep knowledge of theology and religious studies.

His Life as a Clergyman

From 1775 until he passed away in 1826, Robert Hoadley Ashe served as the clergyman for the town of Crewkerne in Somerset, England. This role meant he was in charge of the local church and its community.

He changed his name to Hoadley after he received some property from his aunt. His aunt had married a son of Bishop Hoadley, a well-known bishop. Robert Hoadley Ashe died on May 3, 1826.

Robert Hoadley Ashe's Writings

Robert Hoadley Ashe was also involved in publishing and writing. He helped bring other people's works to light and wrote some of his own.

Editing and Publishing Books

In 1787, Ashe edited a book of poems that had been translated into English. The interesting part was that these translations were done by "Master John Browne of Crewkerne," who was only twelve years old at the time! This showed Ashe's support for young talent.

Defending Bishop Hoadley

In 1799, Robert Hoadley Ashe wrote a letter to John Milner. Milner was an author who had written a history of Winchester. In his letter, Ashe defended Bishop Hoadley, explaining why he disagreed with some of Milner's "false and unfair comments" about the Bishop. This showed Ashe's loyalty and his willingness to stand up for what he believed was right.

Some of Ashe's other letters were also published in a collection called 'Illustrations' by John Nichols, a famous printer and writer.
