Early Life and Education

Robert Hutton studied at Pembroke Hall, which is a college at Cambridge University. A well-known person named William Turner was also there. Turner said that Hutton worked for him at the college. It's likely that Hutton was also Turner's student. However, it seems Hutton did not complete his university degree.

Escaping Danger

During the time of Queen Mary I, England faced big religious changes. Many people who held different religious beliefs were treated unfairly. To stay safe from this danger, Robert Hutton left England and went to live in another country. People like him were called "Marian exiles" because they left during Queen Mary's rule.

His Work as a Cleric

Later, when Queen Elizabeth I became queen, Robert Hutton returned to England. He then became a rector, which is a type of church leader, in a place called Little Braxted in Essex. This happened sometime during Queen Elizabeth's reign. On April 9, 1560, he also became the rector of Wickham Bishops, which is in the same area.

Hutton also held another church position as a vicar in Catterick, Yorkshire. He kept all these important church jobs until he passed away in 1568.

A Popular Book

Robert Hutton also published a book called The Sum of Diuinitie drawen out of the Holy Scripture. This book was released in London in 1548. It was actually a translation of another book called Margarita Theologica, which was written by Jonannes Spangenberg.

His friend and supporter, William Turner, wrote the introduction for Hutton's book. The book became very popular! New versions of it were printed many times, in 1560, 1561, 1567, and 1568. The original Latin version of Margarita was also printed in London in 1566.
