Robert I of Dreux, also known as Robert the Great, was born around 1123 and passed away on October 11, 1188. He was a French prince, the fifth son of Louis VI of France, who was the King of France, and his wife Adélaide de Maurienne.
Life as a Count
In 1137, Robert received the County of Dreux from his father. This was given to him as an appanage, which means it was a special gift of land and titles from the king to a younger son. He held the title of Count of Dreux until 1184. At that time, he passed it on to his own son, Robert II.
Robert I was married three times. His first marriage was in 1139 to Agnes de Garlande. In 1145, he married Hawise of Salisbury. Through this marriage, he became the count of Perche, acting as a guardian for his stepson, Rotrou IV. His third marriage was in 1152 to Agnes de Baudemont. This marriage brought him even more lands and titles, including the County of Braine-sur-Vesle. He also gained control of other important areas like Fère-en-Tardenois and Longueville.
Robert I was also a knight and a warrior. He took part in the Second Crusade, which was a big religious war. In 1148, he was at the Siege of Damascus. People say he was the one who brought the beautiful Damask rose flower from Syria to Europe. Later, in 1158, he fought against the English and was part of the Siege of Séez in 1154.

Robert I had many children from his three marriages.
First Marriage
Robert I married Agnes de Garlande (1122–1143). She was the daughter of Anseau de Garlande, who was the count of Rochefort.

Second Marriage
His second wife was Hawise of Salisbury (1118–1152). She was the widow of Rotrou III and the daughter of Walter Fitz Edward of Salisbury.
- Adèle of Dreux (1145 – after 1210). She married four times, including to Guy II, lord of Châtillon-sur-Marne.
- Alice or Adelheid (1144–?).
Third Marriage
His third wife was Agnes de Baudemont (1130 – around 1202). She was the Countess of Braine.
