You might know Static from the successful animated TV show, Static Shock!

Early Life and Education

Robert Washington III was born and grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He went to Roeper High School and graduated from there. After high school, he briefly studied at New York University.

Creating Comic Book Heroes

In the early 1990s, Robert Washington III became a key part of the comic book world. He worked with Dwayne McDuffie and John Paul Leon. Together, they created Static. This comic featured an African American teenage superhero. Static was published by DC Comics as part of their Milestone line.

Washington wrote the first 18 issues of the Static series. People really liked how he developed the main character. After Static, he worked on other comics too. He helped create Shadow Cabinet. He also wrote for comics like Extreme Justice, The Batman Chronicles, and JLA Secret Files. He even wrote for Ninjak for Acclaim Comics.

Later Years and Legacy

After a few years, it became harder to find work in the comic book industry. Robert Washington III sometimes had trouble finding a steady job. He even experienced being without a home at different times. During these difficult periods, he received help from the Hero Initiative. This is a special organization that helps comic book creators when they need financial support.

On June 6, 2012, Robert Washington III had a medical emergency. He was working in Long Island City, New York, at the time. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in Queens. Sadly, he passed away the next day. Because he did not have much money at the time, The Hero Initiative once again stepped in. They helped raise money to cover the costs of his funeral and burial. Robert Washington III is remembered for his important contributions to the world of comics.
