Robert Le Lorrain facts for kids
Robert Le Lorrain (born in 1666, died in 1743) was a famous French sculptor. He was known for his beautiful Baroque style of art. Robert was born in Paris, France, into a family of people who worked for the government. His father, Claude Le Lorrain, was a business helper for Nicolas Fouquet, who was a very important minister for King Louis XIV.
Robert Le Lorrain learned his skills from other great artists. He was a student of Pierre Paul Puget, who was a sculptor, painter, and architect. When Robert was 18, he joined the studio of another famous sculptor, François Girardon. He didn't just work with Girardon; he also taught Girardon's children how to draw and helped supervise other students.
In 1689, Robert Le Lorrain won a special award called the Prix de Rome. This award helped young artists study in Rome. When he came back to Paris, he joined important art groups. First, he joined the Académie de Saint-Luc. Then, in 1701, he became a member of the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, which was the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Paris. He even became the leader, or Rector, of this Academy in 1737.
Many important people hired Le Lorrain to create sculptures, especially members of the house of Rohan. He also taught other sculptors who became famous, like Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne and Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. Robert Le Lorrain passed away in Paris in 1743.
