Sir Robert Needham (born around 1565, died 1631) was an important English politician. He was also a 'peer,' which means he held a special noble title in Ireland called Viscount Kilmorey.

Robert Needham's Life and Work

Robert Needham grew up in Shavington Hall, near a town called Adderley in Shropshire, England. He went to Shrewsbury School in 1577 and then studied at St John's College, Cambridge, in 1582. He also trained to be a lawyer at the Inner Temple in 1583.

He worked in Ireland and was made a knight in 1594. This honor was given to him by the Lord Deputy of Ireland, who was like the King's main representative there. When his father passed away in 1603, Robert inherited Shavington Hall.

Robert held several important jobs in Shropshire. By 1596, he became a Justice of the Peace. This role meant he helped keep law and order in the area. In 1600, he became a deputy lieutenant for the county. From 1606 to 1607, he served as the High Sheriff of Shropshire, which was a very important local government position.

In 1609, he joined the Council in the Marches of Wales. This council helped govern Wales and parts of England. He even became the vice-president of this council in 1614.

Robert was also a Member of Parliament (MP) for Shropshire. He represented the area in the Parliament of England in 1593 and again from 1604 to 1614. In 1625, he was given the title of Viscount Kilmorey. This made him a member of the Irish nobility.

He passed away in 1631 and was buried in Adderley. His eldest son, Robert, took over his title.
