Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere, was an important Anglo-Irish politician and a member of the nobility. He was born on March 26, 1708, and passed away on November 13, 1774. He held the title of Privy Councillor in Ireland.

Early Life and Political Career
Robert Rochfort was the son of George Rochfort and Lady Elizabeth Moore. His grandfather, also named Robert Rochfort, was a well-known judge.
Young Robert began his political journey in 1731. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for County Westmeath in the Irish House of Commons. He served there until 1738.
Rising in the Peerage
In 1738, Robert Rochfort was given a special honor. He was made a Baron in the Peerage of Ireland, with the title Baron Belfield. This meant he joined the Irish House of Lords, which is like an upper house of parliament. He quickly became a favorite of King George II.
He continued to gain more important titles. In 1749, he became a member of the Privy Council of Ireland. This was a group of trusted advisors to the King. In 1751, he was made Viscount Belfield. His highest honor came in 1756 when he was created Earl of Belvedere.
Lord Belvedere also held an important job called Muster Master-General of Ireland. He was in charge of keeping records of the military forces. He held this position from 1754 until his death.
Belvedere House
Lord Belvedere was also known for building a grand home. In 1740, he ordered the construction of Belvedere House and Gardens. This beautiful estate is still a popular place to visit today.
Family Life
Robert Rochfort was married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Tenison. They married on December 16, 1731. Sadly, she passed away just one year later in 1732.
He married his second wife, Mary Molesworth, on August 7, 1736. She was the daughter of a famous military leader, Field Marshal Richard Molesworth.
Robert Rochfort had several children with Mary. His eldest son, George Rochfort, later inherited his father's titles and became the 2nd Earl of Belvedere. He also had two other sons, Richard and Robert, and a daughter named Jane.
Later Years
Robert Rochfort, 1st Earl of Belvedere, passed away on November 13, 1774. He was 66 years old.
