Robert Scott (born around 1746, died 1808) was a British politician. He was a member of the House of Commons, which is a very important part of the British Parliament, from 1774 to 1780.

Robert Scott was born in Scotland. His father, also named Robert Scott, was a successful businessman. He was a wine merchant, which means he bought and sold wine. His father's business was quite large, trading wine from places like Madeira to many parts of the world, including the West Indies, Africa, and America. Eventually, his father moved to London and continued his business there. In 1767, his father bought a large estate called Crailing in Scotland.

Early Life and Education

Robert Scott went to Eton College, a famous school, in 1757. After that, he studied at Trinity Hall, Cambridge University. He also joined Lincoln's Inn in 1762, which is a place where people train to become lawyers. In 1765, he went on a "Grand Tour" of Europe. This was a popular trip for young, wealthy people to learn about art, history, and culture in other countries. After his studies and travels, Robert joined his father's business.

His Time in Politics

In 1774, Robert Scott was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) in a general election. An MP is a person chosen to represent a specific area in the House of Commons. He was elected for two different areas, called constituencies: Gatton and Wootton Bassett. He chose to represent Wootton Bassett. He served in Parliament until 1780 and did not run for election again after that.

Later Life and Home

In 1782, Robert Scott married Emma Assheton Smith. Later, in 1786, he sold his family's estate in Scotland, Crailing, and moved away from Scotland. He bought a new home called Danesfield House in Buckinghamshire, England. He rebuilt this house in a popular style of the time, known as Georgian style. Robert Scott passed away at Danesfield House on February 6, 1808.
