Robert Shiels was born in Roxburghshire, Scotland. This was around the late 1600s. He later moved to London, England. There, he worked as a printer.

A famous writer named Samuel Johnson liked Robert. Samuel Johnson even hired Robert to help him. Robert was one of six people who helped Samuel Johnson. They worked together to create a very big book. This book was Samuel Johnson's famous Dictionary.

Robert Shiels became sick. He passed away in London in 1753.

What Robert Shiels Wrote

Robert Shiels was good at gathering information. He helped create a large book called Lives of the Poets of Great Britain and Ireland. This book was about many famous poets. The name of Theophilus Cibber was on the book. But Robert Shiels did most of the work. He used information from older writers. He also found new facts for the book.

Besides this big book, Robert Shiels wrote poems. One poem was about 'Marriage'. Another poem praised Samuel Johnson's play, 'Irene'. Robert also admired a Scottish poet named James Thomson. When Thomson died, Robert wrote a poem to honor him. It was called 'Musidorus'.
