Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert Waring Darwin (1724–1816) was an English botanist who lived at Elston Hall. He was known for his interest in plants and for writing a book about them.

About Robert Waring Darwin

Robert Waring Darwin was born in 1724. He was the oldest son of Robert Darwin, a lawyer, and Elizabeth Hill. He had three brothers, including Erasmus Darwin, who was a famous poet, thinker, and doctor. Robert Waring Darwin was a Christian and never married or had children. However, his nephew, Dr. Robert Waring Darwin, who was the father of the famous scientist Charles Darwin, was named after him.

His Education and Work

Robert Waring Darwin went to Chesterfield Grammar School. Later, he studied at St John's College, Cambridge. Even though he didn't finish his degree, he became a lawyer. He worked at important law places called Lincoln's Inn and Gray's Inn. When his father passed away in 1754, Robert inherited Elston Hall.

His Book on Plants

In 1787, when he was older, Robert Waring Darwin published a book called Principia Botanica. The full title was Principia Botanica or, a Concise and Easy Introduction to the Sexual Botany of Linnaeus. This book was an easy guide to the Linnean system of taxonomy. This system was a way of classifying and naming plants, created by a scientist named Linnaeus.

His great-nephew, Charles Darwin, later wrote about Robert in his own book, The Autobiography of Charles Darwin. Charles said that Robert loved poetry and also studied botany (the study of plants). Charles mentioned that Robert's book was beautifully written. He also noted that the book contained many interesting facts about biology, a subject that wasn't very popular in England at that time. People liked the book, and it even had a third edition, meaning it was printed many times because it sold well.
