His Early Life
Robert William Hay was born in 1786. His birthplace was Westminster, a part of London, England. His father was Reverend George William Auriol Hay-Drummond. His mother was Elizabeth Margaret (Marshall) Hay-Drummond. His grandfather, Robert Hay Drummond, was a very important church leader. He was the Archbishop of York from 1761 to 1776.
Robert William Hay went to Christ Church, Oxford, a famous university. He earned his first degree in 1807. He then completed a Master of Arts degree in 1809.
His Career in Government
Robert William Hay started his career in 1812. He worked as a private secretary for Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville. Viscount Melville was in charge of the British Royal Navy. This role was called the First Lord of the Admiralty.
After that, Hay helped manage supplies for the Royal Navy. He was a Victualling Commissioner. This meant he made sure ships had enough food and other important items.
From 1825 to 1836, he held a very important job. He was the Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies. In this role, he helped manage Britain's many colonies. These were places like Canada, Australia, and parts of Africa. Even though he held this title, another person named James Stephen did a lot of the actual work.
In 1831, Hay was asked to join a special group. This group was called the Government Commission upon Emigration. They looked into how people were moving from Britain to other countries. The group finished its work in 1832.
He was also chosen as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1814. This is a special honor for people who have done great things in science.
His Later Years and Death
Robert William Hay passed away on May 9, 1861. He died in Malta, an island country in the Mediterranean Sea.
His Legacy
- A major road in Perth, Western Australia, is named after him. It is called Hay Street.
