Early Life and Family
Robert Willoughby was born around 1472. His father was Sir Robert Willoughby, 1st Baron Willoughby de Broke. His mother was Blanche Champernowne.
Robert Willoughby married twice. His first wife was Elizabeth Beauchamp. She was the daughter of Richard Beauchamp, 2nd Baron Beauchamp of Powick. They had two sons: Edward and Anthony.
His second wife was Lady Dorothy Grey. She was the daughter of Thomas Grey, 1st Marquess of Dorset. With Dorothy, Robert had six children. These included sons Henry and William. His daughters Elizabeth and Anne also married into important families.
Military Service and Titles
Robert Willoughby became a knight before 1504. A knight was a person given a special title by the King for their service. He served in the army in France in 1513. He was also expected to attend the famous Field of the Cloth of Gold event in June 1520. This was a grand meeting between the kings of England and France.
When his father died in 1502, Robert inherited his father's title. He became the 2nd Baron Willoughby de Broke.
Later Life and Legacy
Robert Willoughby passed away on 10 November 1521. He died in Bere Ferrers, Devon. After his death, the title of Baron Willoughby de Broke went into "abeyance." This means the title was temporarily without an owner.
His widow, Dorothy, later married William Blount, 4th Baron Mountjoy.
