Robert d'Aguiló facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Robert d'Aguiló (born around 1100, died around 1159) was a Norman knight. He was also known as Robert Bordet. He moved from Normandy to Catalonia in the early 12th century.

Robert came from a place called Cullei, which is now Rabodanges in Orne, France. His name "d'Aguiló" is a Catalan version of "d'Aculley" or "de Culley". He started using this name after he married the daughter of a Catalan noble.

Robert's Role as Governor

In 1124, Robert became the governor of Tudela. This was a new territory that had just been taken over. He stayed in this important job for two years.

Three years later, on March 14, 1129, he was given a new role. Olegarius, who was the Bishop of Barcelona, gave him control over the area of Tarragona. Robert was given the title "Prince of Tarragona." This meant he was the main defender or advocate for the church in that region. He held this position in Tarragona until 1153.

Land and Agreements

Robert made several important decisions about land and power. On January 24, 1150, he gave the control of Riudoms to a person named Arnau de Palomar.

In 1149, Robert also gave a special document, called a charter, to the city of Tarragona. This charter set out the city's rights and rules. He chose a man named Guillem (William) to be the lord of the city. However, Guillem had to step down in 1157. This happened because Guillem tried to give his rights in the city to the Count of Barcelona, but Robert did not agree to it.

On April 29, 1157, Robert gave the control of Reus to the Church of Tarragona. But less than two months later, on June 3, it was given to Bertran de Castellet. In 1159, an agreement was made between the count, the bishop, and Robert.

Robert's Family

Robert was married to Agnes Sibylla, who died in 1170. They had four sons together:

  • Guillem (William), who died in 1168.
  • Robert
  • Ricard (Richard)
  • Berenguer (Berengar)
