A Look Back at Riudoms' History
Riudoms has a long and interesting history! It started as a small farming settlement during Roman times. Archaeologists have found old Roman remains and coins here.
From Roman Times to a New Town
After the Romans, the area became less populated when Muslims ruled the region in the 8th century. Later, in 1150, a Norman knight named Robert d'Aguiló took control of the area. He was working for the Catalan count.
Robert d'Aguiló then gave the land of Riudoms to Arnau de Palomar on January 24, 1150. A castle was built, and a new town grew up around it.
The Birthplace of Antoni Gaudí?
Many people believe that Riudoms is the birthplace of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. He designed the incredible Sagrada Família church in Barcelona. Gaudí is one of the most well-known creators of the artistic style called Modernisme.
What Riudoms Produces
Historically, the main product grown in Riudoms was the hazelnut. Today, hazelnut farming is not as common as it used to be. Another important product from the area is extra virgin olive oil.
