Robert de Fiennes, also known as Moreau, was an important French leader who lived from 1308 to 1385. He held a very powerful position called the Constable of France. This role was like being the commander-in-chief of the French army.

Robert de Fiennes: A French Hero

Robert de Fiennes was the 28th person to become the Constable of France. This was a top military job in the kingdom. He played a key role in defending France during a long conflict known as the Hundred Years' War.

Early Life and Family

Robert de Fiennes came from a noble family. His father was Jean de Fiennes, who was the Lord of Tingry. His mother was Isabella of Flanders. Her parents were Guy, Count of Flanders and Isabelle of Luxembourg.

A Leader for France

In 1356, Robert de Fiennes took over the role of Constable of France. He replaced Walter VI, Count of Brienne. He quickly proved himself to be a strong leader.

In 1358, he successfully stopped English forces from taking over the city of Amiens. This was a very important victory for France. From 1360 to 1361, he also served as the Governor of Languedoc. This meant he was in charge of a large region in southern France.

The Treaty of Brétigny and a Brave Stand

After a peace agreement called the Treaty of Brétigny was signed, things changed for Robert. His castle, located in Fiennes, Pas-de-Calais, ended up in an area controlled by the English.

However, Robert de Fiennes was very loyal to France. He refused to promise his loyalty to the English King. Because of his refusal, a huge English army of 25,000 soldiers surrounded and attacked his castle.

Retirement and Legacy

By 1370, Robert de Fiennes was getting older. He decided to step down from his role as Constable. Bertrand du Guesclin, another famous French military leader, took his place.

Personal Life

Robert de Fiennes was married twice. His first wife was Béatrice Dame de Gavre. Later, he married Marguerite de Melun. He did not have any known children.
