Early Life and Education
Roberto Fico was born in Naples, Italy. He grew up in a middle-class family. For college, he studied communication studies at the University of Trieste. He also spent time studying at the University of Helsinki in Finland as part of an exchange program.
After finishing his studies, Fico had many different jobs. He worked in press offices, a hotel, and for a tour company. He also worked at a call center, a butcher's shop, and even imported fabrics from Morocco.
Start in Politics
Fico became interested in politics in 2005. He started a local group in Naples to discuss political ideas with others. This group was part of a bigger movement that later became the Five Star Movement (M5S).
He ran for office several times. In 2010, he was a candidate for President of the Campania region but did not win. The next year, he ran for Mayor of Naples but was also not elected.
In 2012, Fico won an online vote among M5S members. This made him a top candidate for the national government. In the 2013 general election, he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, which is part of the Italian Parliament.
Work in Parliament

After being elected, Fico became the Chairman of the RAI Supervision Commission. This group oversees Italy's main public broadcaster. He made their meetings more open by streaming them online for everyone to see. He also gave up the extra pay and personal car that came with the job.
Fico worked on a law to make RAI more transparent. Because of his work, the company now has to share how much its top managers are paid.
President of the Chamber of Deputies
In the 2018 election, Fico was re-elected to the Chamber of Deputies. On 24 March 2018, he was chosen as the President of the Chamber of Deputies. He was supported by his own party and several others.
A month later, Italy's political parties were struggling to form a government. The President of Italy, Sergio Mattarella, gave Fico a special task. He asked him to help the Five Star Movement and the Democratic Party find a way to work together.
During his time as President, Fico often disagreed with the policies of Interior Minister Matteo Salvini, especially on topics like immigration.
Political Beliefs
Fico is known for holding progressive views. He supports laws that would give more rights to same-sex couples. He also supports jus soli, an idea that says a person should become a citizen of the country where they are born.
Within the Five Star Movement, Fico is seen as a leader of the party's left-wing, or more progressive, members.
