Roberto Goyeneche, known as "El Polaco"

Roberto Goyeneche (born January 29, 1926, in Saavedra, Autonomous City of Buenos Aires; died August 27, 1994, in Buenos Aires) was a famous Argentine tango singer. He was known for his unique style and became a legend in the music world of Buenos Aires.

He was often called El Polaco, which means "the Polish one." People gave him this nickname because he had blond hair and was thin, like many Polish immigrants at the time. He grew up in the Saavedra neighborhood, which he was very connected to throughout his life.

A Star's Journey

Roberto Goyeneche learned to sing tango by listening to the great Carlos Gardel. As he grew, he developed his own special way of singing, using a technique called rubato, which means stretching or slowing down the rhythm of the music.

Early Career

In 1944, when he was 18, Roberto won a local singing contest. This led him to join Raúl Kaplún's orchestra. Soon after, he performed live for the first time on Radio Belgrano, a popular radio station. In 1952, he started working with another talented musician, Horacio Salgán.

Working with Tango Legends

A few years later, in 1956, Goyeneche became a singer for the orchestra of his good friend, Aníbal Troilo. Together, they recorded 26 songs that became very popular. Later, Roberto Goyeneche was the first singer to record a famous song called Balada Para Un Loco, written by the well-known composer Ástor Piazzolla. He began his solo singing career in 1963.

On the Big Screen

During the 1980s, Roberto Goyeneche also appeared in movies. He was a special guest in two films, El exilio de Gardel and Sur. Both movies were directed by Fernando Solanas.

A Lasting Legacy

When Roberto Goyeneche passed away on August 27, 1994, at the age of 68, he was considered the greatest active tango singer. To honor his memory, an avenue in his childhood neighborhood of Saavedra in Buenos Aires was named after him.
