A Look at Rock's History

The land that became the Town of Rock was first measured in the summer of 1851. A team working for the U.S. government did this important job. They walked through forests and swamps, using tools like chains and compasses. They marked all the corners of the land sections.

After their work, the main surveyor wrote down what the area was like. He said the soil was mostly poor, made of loam and sand. The trees were mostly birch, oak, aspen, tamarack, and pine. He noted that the pine trees were new growth and not very strong. He also mentioned that fires often happened, which changed the types of trees growing there. The land was generally flat and a bit stony, with reddish sandstone.

The Town of Rock officially started in 1878.
