A Look Back: Rocky Point's History
Early Days and Population
In 1893, Rocky Point was home to one of the 38 post offices in Botetourt County. This fact was shared in the local newspaper, the Fincastle Herald. By the early 1900s, Rocky Point was a small settlement, often called a hamlet. Its population was quite small. In 1900, 15 people lived there. This number changed slightly to 14 people in 1909 and stayed at 14 in 1925.
Mining and Railways
A big change came to Rocky Point starting in 1918. The Liberty Lime and Stone Company began mining in the area. To help with this work, a special train track was built. This track was a "spur line" of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway. It went directly to the mine, making it easier to transport materials.
