Playing Career Highlights
Time in Argentina
Rodolfo Arruabarrena, also known as "El Vasco" (The Basque), started his professional football journey in 1993. He joined Boca Juniors, one of Argentina's biggest clubs. He played there until 2000.
For six months in 1996, he played on loan for Rosario Central. After that, he returned to Boca Juniors and became a regular player in their team.
While at Boca, Rodolfo helped his team win important championships. They won the Argentine first division tournaments in 1998 (Apertura) and 1999 (Clausura). He also won the Copa Libertadores in 2000, which is a very important South American club competition. Overall, he played 178 games for Boca Juniors and scored 7 goals.
Playing for Villarreal in Spain
In mid-2000, Rodolfo moved to Spain to play for Villarreal. He was a very reliable player as a left-back. Because of his strong performances, he often became the team's captain.
He holds a record for Villarreal, having played 178 matches in La Liga, which is Spain's top football league. Villarreal's nickname is El Submarino Amarillo, meaning "The Yellow Submarine."
Rodolfo scored important goals in the 2005–06 UEFA Champions League. His goals helped Villarreal beat strong teams like Rangers F.C. from Scotland and Inter Milan from Italy. This helped Villarreal reach the semi-finals in their very first season in the Champions League.
With Villarreal, he also won the UEFA Intertoto Cup twice, in 2003 and 2004. He played over 200 league and international matches for the Spanish team.
Move to AEK Athens
On May 3, 2007, Rodolfo signed a three-year contract with AEK Athens, a top club in Greece. He decided to join AEK Athens partly because of their manager, Lorenzo Serra Ferrer, and their president, Demis Nikolaidis.
In one match, Rodolfo helped set up a goal for the famous Brazilian player Rivaldo. He also assisted a goal for Ismael Blanco in a UEFA Cup match. Rodolfo played 25 games for AEK in one season, but he suffered a serious injury halfway through. In July 2008, the AEK Athens manager announced that Rodolfo was no longer part of the team's plans.
International Matches for Argentina
Rodolfo "El Vasco" Arruabarrena played five matches for the Argentina national team. He also played several games for Argentina's youth teams. His first match for the senior national team was against Chile in 1994.
He played a few more matches in 1995 and one against England in 2000. He was called up again in 2006 and 2007 for friendly matches against Spain and France. He was also on the bench for a friendly match against Chile in April 2007.
