Rodolfo J. Illanes Alvarado (born August 18, 1958 – died August 25, 2016) was a Bolivian lawyer and politician. He served as the Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs for a short time in 2016. This was during the government of President Evo Morales.

About Rodolfo Illanes

Rodolfo Illanes was born in the city of La Paz, Bolivia, in 1958. He studied law at the Higher University of San Andrés (UMSA). He also specialized in Criminal Sciences at the University of Costa Rica.

He worked as an adviser to President Evo Morales during his first term. Later, he held important roles in the Ministry of Labour. He was the Superintendent of Civil Service. After that, he became the Deputy Minister of Work, Employment, and Social Security.

On March 14, 2016, he took on the role of Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. He replaced Marcelo Elío Chávez in this position.

Events Leading to His Death

On August 25, 2016, Rodolfo Illanes was traveling to Panduro. He was going there to talk with people who were protesting against the government. While on his way, he and his assistant were taken by striking miners.

Sadly, he was later killed by the miners who had taken him. This event caused a lot of shock and sadness in South America. Reymi Ferreira, who was the Defence Minister at the time, spoke about the event on television. He described how Illanes, who had just started his new role in March, had died.

Carlos Romero, another government minister, called the killing "cowardly and brutal." He asked the miners to return Illanes' body right away.
