Battle of New Orleans 1815
The Rodriguez Canal cut across the battlefield during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815.

The Rodriguez Canal was a ditch that played a key role in the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Andrew Jackson, a famous American general, used this ditch as a strong defensive line for his troops.

History

The Rodriguez Canal was originally a millrace, which is a channel that carries water to power a sawmill. It was located between two large farms called plantations, named Chalmette and Macarty.

At the time of the Battle of New Orleans, the canal was old and worn out. It was about four feet deep and twenty feet wide. This made it a natural barrier that separated the two sides fighting in the battle.

General Jackson wisely chose to set up his army's defensive position right behind this ditch. His soldiers built strong walls, called ramparts, behind the canal to protect themselves even more.

Today, what's left of the Rodriguez Canal is part of the Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Visitors can still see where this important ditch once helped defend the American forces.
