Roger Agnelli (May 3, 1959 – March 19, 2016) was an important Brazilian business leader. He was known for running Vale SA, one of the biggest mining companies in the world. In 2013, a magazine called Harvard Business Review named him the fourth best CEO globally. He was ranked just after famous leaders like Steve Jobs from Apple Inc. and Jeff Bezos from Amazon.com.
Roger Agnelli had some disagreements with Brazil's government. These issues led to him leaving Vale SA in 2011. Sadly, he died on March 19, 2016, in a plane crash in São Paulo, Brazil. His wife, son, and daughter also died in the accident.

Roger Agnelli's Early Life and Family
Roger Agnelli was born on May 3, 1959, in São Paulo, Brazil. His family was from Italy and had a modest background. In 1981, he finished his studies in economics. He graduated from a university called Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado, often called FAAP.
He was married to Andréia. They had two children together: a daughter named Ana Carolina and a son named João.
His Career in Business
Roger Agnelli worked at a bank called Banco Bradesco for many years, from 1981 to 1997. He then became an Executive Director there in 1998. He stayed in that role until he left the bank in 2000.
From 2000 to 2001, Agnelli was the President and CEO of Bradespar. This was a Brazilian company that held investments from Banco Bradesco.
Also during 2000 and 2001, he was the Chairman of the Board of Directors for Vale SA. In 2001, he became the President and CEO of Vale SA. He led this huge mining company until 2011.
After leaving Vale, Agnelli started his own company. From 2012 until his death in 2016, he was a founding partner and CEO of AGN Holding. This was a private Brazilian investment group.
Leaving Vale SA: A Government Request
In March 2011, while Roger Agnelli was leading Vale SA, there were reports. The company was thinking about investing in a big hydroelectric project. This project was the Belo Monte Dam, also known as the Amazon dam project.
Just two weeks after this news, Agnelli was asked to leave his position. Brazil's government requested this change. Another executive, Murilo Ferreira, took over as CEO. He was known to be more aligned with the ruling Workers Party. He was also an acquaintance of the Brazilian president at the time, Dilma Rousseff.
Agnelli had faced disagreements before with a former Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. This happened after he let go of 2,000 workers during a global financial crisis in 2008. He had also said that members of the Workers Party wanted to place their own people at Vale SA. They also wanted more say in the company's important decisions.
Roger Agnelli's Death
On March 19, 2016, Roger Agnelli died in a plane crash. His wife and two children were also on board. The plane crashed into two homes shortly after taking off. This happened at Campo de Marte Airport in northern São Paulo. They were traveling to a wedding in Rio de Janeiro. Seven people died in total in the accident.
