Roger Flower's Life and Career
Roger Flower was the son of William Flower. His father was the High Sheriff of Rutland in 1383. Roger followed in his father's footsteps in public service.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
Roger Flower first became a Member of Parliament for Rutland in 1396. He was elected many more times after that. He served in Parliament in 1399, 1402, 1404, and again in 1413–1414. Being an MP meant he represented his local area in the government.
Serving as Speaker of the House
Roger Flower was chosen to be the Speaker of the House of Commons four times. This was a very big deal! He was Speaker in 1416, 1417, 1419, and 1422. Only one other person, Thomas Chaucer, had been Speaker so many times before him. The Speaker's job is to lead the discussions in the House of Commons.
His Work as a Lawyer and Sheriff
Roger Flower was also a lawyer. He managed important legal and public matters. In 1416, he became the chief manager for the Duchy of Lancaster lands. These lands were located north of the Trent river. He owned land in Leicestershire and his family home in Oakham, Rutland. He was also appointed High Sheriff of Rutland in 1407 and 1412. The Sheriff was a key local official.
Roger Flower passed away by November 1427. His will was officially approved in June 1428.
Roger Flower's Family
Roger Flower was married twice. His first wife was Catherine. She was the daughter of William Dalby. His second wife was Cecile, who outlived him.
He had five sons: Thomas, Robert, Roger, John, and William. He also had two daughters: Anneys and Joan. Joan married Sir Henry Plesyngton.
His oldest son, Thomas, also became a Member of Parliament for Rutland. Thomas was also the Sheriff of Rutland six times.
The family's home is called Flore's House. It is a well-known building on High Street in Oakham.
