Roger Furman (born March 22, 1924 – died November 27, 1983) was an American artist who did many things in theater. He was an actor, a director, someone who wrote plays (a playwright), and a producer. He started and owned the New Heritage Repertory Theater, which is the oldest theater company still active in Harlem, New York. He also helped create the Black Theatre Alliance.

Roger Furman was well-known for helping Black theater grow and succeed. He worked hard to make sure Black artists had opportunities. Many of the plays he directed or produced were shown at famous places like the Brooklyn Academy of Music.

Roger Furman also shared his knowledge with others. He taught classes about Black drama at several universities. These included New York University, Rutgers, and Hartford University.

Remembering Roger Furman

To honor his important work, a special place was named after him. The Roger Furman Theatre is located at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. This center is a famous library and research hub focused on Black history and culture.

Roger Furman passed away in 1983 at his home in Upper Manhattan. He was 59 years old. His legacy continues to inspire many in the world of theater.
