Coaching Teams: Roger Lemerre's Managerial Journey

After his playing career, Roger Lemerre became a football manager. He coached many teams, helping them improve and win games.

Starting as a Club Coach

From 1975 to 1978, he was the coach of Red Star. This club is from a town called Saint-Ouen in France. After that, he went back to Lens for one season as their coach.

He then coached Paris FC for two seasons. In 1983, he moved to Tunisia to manage Espérance Tunis for a season. When he returned to France, he coached Red Star again.

Leading the French Military Team

For ten years, Roger Lemerre coached the French national military football team. He was very successful with them. His team won the World Championships for military teams.

Helping Lens and Joining the National Team

In 1997, he coached Lens again for a short time. He helped the team avoid being moved down to a lower league. This was a big achievement for the club.

In 1998, Roger Lemerre became an assistant coach for the French national team. He worked with the head coach, Aimé Jacquet. Together, they helped France win the World Cup that year.

Success with France's National Team

After the World Cup victory, Roger Lemerre became the head coach of the French national team. He led them to win the Euro 2000 tournament, which was held in the Netherlands and Belgium.

The next year, in 2001, his team also won the FIFA Confederations Cup. However, in the 2002 FIFA World Cup, the French team did not do well. They were knocked out in the first round. Because of this, the French Football Federation decided to let him go.

Coaching Tunisia and Morocco

Even after leaving the French team, Roger Lemerre's coaching career continued. The Tunisian Football Federation hired him to manage the Tunisian national side. He led Tunisia to victory in the African Nations Cup in 2004. This made him the first coach ever to win two different big continental tournaments: Euro 2000 and the African Cup of Nations.

He also helped Tunisia qualify for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. In February 2008, he left the Tunisian team after they were knocked out of the 2008 African Cup of Nations in the quarter-finals.

In May 2008, Roger Lemerre became the new head coach of the Morocco national team. He started his new role on July 1. However, he was fired on July 9, 2009, because the team's results were not good enough.

Later Club Coaching Roles

On December 18, 2009, Roger Lemerre took a coaching job at a Turkish club called Ankaragücü. He signed a six-month contract. He helped the team improve and avoid being moved to a lower league. But in May 2010, the club decided not to extend his contract.

In December 2013, Lemerre agreed to coach the Tunisian team Étoile du Sahel for six months. In January 2016, he became the new manager of Sedan, one of his former clubs. He also had more coaching spells with Étoile du Sahel in 2018-2019 and 2021-2022.
