Exploring the Rogers Historic District

What Makes a Place Historic?

A historic district is a group of buildings, structures, or sites. They are connected by history, architecture, or culture. These areas are protected to save their unique character. The Rogers district shows how the city looked long ago.

How the District Grew Over Time

The Rogers Commercial Historic District has changed its size over the years. It started small and then grew to include more important buildings.

Starting Small: Walnut Street (1988)

The district first became official in 1988. Back then, it was called the Walnut Street Historic District. It included buildings on two blocks of Walnut Street. These buildings were mostly shops and businesses. They were built between 1885 and 1912. Many of them showed the Italianate style of architecture.

Expanding the District (1993)

In 1993, the district got much bigger. Its name changed to the Rogers Commercial Historic District. It now included two more blocks. These were on First and Second Streets. They also had important commercial buildings. These newer additions were built up to 1943.

This expansion added several famous buildings. These included the old Rogers Post Office Building and the Lane Hotel. The Applegate Drugstore and the Bank of Rogers Building were also added. This brought in new building styles. The old post office, for example, used a Colonial Revival style. The Lane Hotel showed a Spanish Colonial Revival look.

More Additions (1998, 2002, 2012)

The district continued to grow. In 1998, 120 South Second Street was added. Then, in 2002, the famous Victory Theater joined the district. The last expansion happened in 2012. This added the 200 block of West Elm Street.

Why These Buildings Are Important

The buildings in this district tell a story. They show how Rogers developed from the late 1800s. They also show different building styles popular at the time. Protecting these buildings helps us remember the city's past.
