Roi Yosef Levy (Hebrew: רועי לוי; born May 29, 1979 – died October 7, 2023) was a brave officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He reached the rank of a high-level leader, known as a colonel. His last important job was leading a special army group called the Multidimensional Unit.
Before that, he led many other important army groups. These included the Fire Training Center in Melah, the Bar'am Brigade, and the special Unit 621 - 'Egoz'. He also led the Hadar Battalion and the 1st 'Golani' Brigade. Roi Levy was sadly killed during a conflict in the battle of Re'im on October 7, 2023. This happened during the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.

Who Was Roi Levy?
Roi Levy was born in the United States. He grew up in the city of Jerusalem, Israel. He went to high school at the Yeshiva High School in Beit El. He also studied at the Atarot Yerushalayim Yeshiva.
In March 1999, Roi joined the Israeli army, the IDF. He became part of the 1st Brigade and joined a special scouting team called the Golani reconnaissance platoon. After his training, he served as a soldier in this team. He took part in missions in southern Lebanon.
Roi Levy's Early Army Career
After finishing his training, Roi Levy became a team leader in the scouting platoon. He led groups of soldiers and fought in important missions, like Operation Defensive Shield. Later, he became a trainer for new soldiers in the Golani Brigade.
He then became the commander of a rifle company in Battalion 51. During the Second Lebanon War, he helped plan army operations for the Golani Brigade. From 2006 to 2007, he led the Golani Reconnaissance Platoon.
Leading Special Missions
Between 2007 and 2008, Roi Levy led the Golani Brigade. He commanded many important missions. One of these was called Operation Precedent Decision. The goal was to stop a group that was causing trouble in the Saja'iyya area. Roi's scouting company and another Golani team worked together. They surrounded the area, and the mission was successful.
After this, he took a break from the army to study law at the Ono Academic College. But when Operation Cast Lead began, he stopped his studies to rejoin his Golani Brigade unit. During this time, he was injured in his leg while facing enemies. After he finished his studies, he became a deputy commander for Battalion 12 from 2011 to 2012.
Rising Through the Ranks
In June 2013, Roi Levy was promoted to Lieutenant Colonel. He became the commander of the Golani Brigade. He led his unit in important missions, including Operation Protective Edge. During this operation, he was seriously injured in the head. Because of his injury, he had to leave his role as battalion commander.
After recovering and earning a master's degree in law, he took on a new role. From 2015 to 2016, he commanded the Hadar Battalion at Bahad 1. On May 16, 2016, he was chosen to lead the Egoz Unit, a special forces group.
In April 2018, the army's Chief of Staff, Gadi Eisenkot, chose Roi to light the IDF torch. This was a special honor for Israel's 70th Independence Day. His unit also received an award for excellence from the Chief of Staff. He finished his role with the Egoz Unit on May 3, 2018.
On June 27, 2018, he was promoted to Colonel. He then became the commander of the Bar'am Brigade. He led this brigade in missions like Operation Northern Shield. He served in this role until August 27, 2020. After this, he studied at the National Security College from 2020 to 2021.
In 2021, Roi Levy became the commander of the Fire Training Center in Melah. He held this position until 2023. On July 30, 2023, he was appointed to lead the Multidimensional Unit. Sadly, he was killed on October 7, 2023, during a conflict in the battle of Re'im. This happened on the first day of the 2023 Israel–Hamas war.
Roi Levy's Family Life
Roi Levy was married to Yael. They had five children together. He earned two degrees in law: a bachelor's degree from the Ono Academic College and a master's degree from Bar-Ilan University.
