Yonatan Steinberg (born 1980, died 2023) was an important officer in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He reached the rank of colonel. He was in charge of the Nahal Brigade, a large army unit. Before this, he led other groups, like the Center for Tactical Training and the Binyamin Brigade. He also commanded Battalion 931. Sadly, he died during a surprise attack in Israel in October 2023.

Yonatan Steinberg went to high school in Jerusalem. He also studied at a religious school called a yeshiva in Tel Aviv.
Joining the Army
In August 2000, he joined the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). He was assigned to Battalion 931, which is part of the Nahal Brigade. After finishing his basic training, he became a combat soldier in this battalion.
He then took special courses. These included training for the Combat Intelligence Collection Corps. He also went to the IDF's Officer Candidate School. After these courses, he returned to Battalion 931. There, he became a platoon commander. A platoon is a small group of soldiers. He took part in military operations during a period known as the Second Intifada.
His Military Career
Later, Yonatan Steinberg became a company commander in Battalion 931. A company is a larger group of soldiers than a platoon. From 2011 to 2012, he served as the deputy commander of Battalion 931.
After that, he was an assistant commander for operations in the Nahal Brigade. This was between 2012 and 2013. He then became the Military Secretary to the Chief of Staff. This is a very important role, and he held it from 2013 to 2015.
In 2016, he was a lieutenant colonel in Battalion 931. By 2019, he was made commander of the Binyamin Brigade. This is when he reached the rank of colonel. In 2022, he became the chief leader for tactical operations. He held this job until 2023. In May 2023, he was made the commander of the 933rd Brigade.
His Death
On October 7, 2023, Colonel Steinberg was killed. This happened during a fight with armed groups during a large attack on Israel. He was one of the highest-ranking IDF officers to die in action in a long time. In March 2024, his army weapon was found by Israeli soldiers in Khan Yunis, along with items belonging to people who had been taken from Israel.
His Family Life
Yonatan Steinberg lived in a place called Shomria. This is a religious community in southern Israel. He lived there with his wife, Yiska, and their six children.
