About Ono Academic College

How the College Started

Ono Academic College began in 1995. A person named Ranan Hartman founded it. His goal was to make college education available to more people. He especially wanted to help groups who might not usually go to college.

At first, the college worked with the University of Manchester. Later, it became a fully recognized Israeli college. It started very small, with only 100 students. They studied law and business in a single building.

Today, Ono Academic College is much bigger. It has 18,000 students across five campuses. These campuses are in Kiryat Ono, Jerusalem, Haifa, Netanya, and Or Yehuda. The college offers 47 different study programs.

Helping All Students

Ono Academic College has special programs for different groups. For example, its campuses in Or Yehuda and Jerusalem help Haredi Jewish students. Men and women attend classes on separate days there.

The college also has a unique law program. In this program, Muslim, Christian, and Jewish religious leaders study together. Many Ethiopian-Israeli students also attend the college. The founder helped create scholarships for them. Over 1,000 Ethiopian-Israeli students have graduated. One famous graduate is Pnina Tamano-Shata. She was the first Ethiopian-born woman to join the Knesset (Israel's parliament).

Programs for Special Needs

The college works to include students with disabilities. In 2012, it started a program for students with Asperger syndrome. They can earn a bachelor's degree in business. There is also a special program for Druze women.

The Center for Academic Accessibility helps students with disabilities. It makes sure everyone can get a college degree. In 2013, the college created Ro'im Rachok. This program trains young adults with autism for service in the Israel Defense Forces.

Music and New Campuses

In 2016, the college opened the Jonathan Wohl School of Music. A famous musician, Noam Sheriff, led this school. He believed music could bring people together. This idea fit well with the college's goals.

A new large campus was planned in 2020. It was built at Savyon Junction. This campus has academic buildings and offices. It was finished and opened in 2023.
