What is the Diocese of Kamloops?
A diocese is like a specific region or district within the Roman Catholic Church. It has its own leader, called a bishop. The Diocese of Kamloops covers a large area in central British Columbia, Canada. It helps to organize and support Catholic communities in this region.
People and Parishes
In 2006, the Diocese of Kamloops had about 51,900 Catholic members. These members are served by many dedicated people. There are 14 priests who work directly for the diocese. Also, 8 priests from religious groups, 1 permanent deacon, and 26 religious sisters and brothers help out. They all serve in 25 different parishes. A parish is a local church community, usually with its own church building and priest.
Leaders of the Diocese
The Diocese of Kamloops has been led by several bishops since it was created. These leaders are called "Ordinaries." They guide the spiritual life and activities of the diocese.
- Edward Quentin Jennings was the first bishop, from 1946 to 1952.
- Michael Alphonsus Harrington led the diocese from 1952 to 1973.
- Adam Exner was bishop from 1974 to 1982.
- Lawrence Sabatini, C.S., served from 1982 to 1999. He is now a Bishop Emeritus, meaning he has retired.
- David Monroe was bishop from 2002 to 2016. He is also a Bishop Emeritus.
- Joseph Phuong Nguyen became bishop in 2016 and is the current leader.
Learning and Schools
Education is an important part of the Diocese of Kamloops. Catholic schools help students learn in a faith-filled environment.
St. Ann's Academy
St. Ann's Academy in Kamloops has a long history. It started as a high school in 1910. However, in 1970, it became an elementary school because it was hard to keep up with new school rules in British Columbia.
Later, in 1980, Bishop Adam Exner asked a group called the Congregation of Christian Brothers to help. They reopened the high school section. In September 1981, St. Ann's Academy became a high school again. Today, it serves about 600 students, both boys and girls.
