The Roman Catholic Diocese of Quiché is a special church area in Guatemala. It is part of the larger Archdiocese of Los Altos Quetzaltenango-Totonicapán. A diocese is like a region where a bishop leads the Catholic Church.

History of the Diocese

The Diocese of Quiché was created a long time ago. It started on April 27, 1967. Back then, it was called the Diocese of Santa Cruz del Quiché. Its land was taken from another church area, the Diocese of Sololá.

Later, on July 11, 2000, its name was changed. It became known simply as the Diocese of Quiché.

Leaders of the Diocese

The diocese has had several leaders over the years. These leaders are called bishops. They guide the church community in the region.

Early Bishops of Santa Cruz del Quiché

  • Humberto Lara Mejía (1967–1972): He was the first bishop of this area.
  • Juan José Gerardi Conedera (1974–1984): He was also a bishop here.

Bishops of Quiché

  • Julio Edgar Cabrera Ovalle (1986–2001): He led the diocese for many years.
  • Mario Alberto Molina Palma (2004–2011): He later became an archbishop.
  • Rosolino Bianchetti Boffelli (2012–present): He is the current bishop of the Diocese of Quiché.
