History of the Diocese

How the Diocese Started

The Diocese of Quiché was created on April 27, 1967. Before that, it was part of another church area called the Diocese of Sololá. It was first known as the Diocese of Santa Cruz del Quiché.

Name Change

Later, on July 11, 2000, the name was changed. It became simply the Diocese of Quiché. This is the name it still uses today.

Bishops of Quiché

The diocese has had several bishops over the years. These leaders guide the Catholic community in the Quiché region. They help manage the churches and support the people.

The first bishop was Humberto Lara Mejía. He served from 1967 to 1972. After him, other bishops have led the diocese. Each bishop works to serve the community and spread the teachings of the church.

Currently, the bishop of Quiché is Juan Manuel Cuá Ajacum. He helps oversee the many parishes and Catholic followers in the area.
