The Romford–Upminster line is a short railway line in Greater London. It connects the town of Romford to Upminster. This line is special because it's a "branch line." A branch line is like a smaller road that splits off from a main highway.

This railway connects to two other important lines. At Romford, it joins the Great Eastern Main Line. At Upminster, it connects to the London, Tilbury and Southend Line and the London Underground (the Tube).

About the Line

The Romford–Upminster line is about 3.5 miles (5.6 kilometers) long. It has only one station in the middle, called Emerson Park.

The entire line has just one track. This means trains have to take turns using it. The line is also "electrified." This means it uses electricity to power the trains, instead of diesel fuel. The electricity is supplied at 25,000 volts AC. Trains on this line usually travel at a top speed of 30 miles per hour (48 kilometers per hour).

Who Runs the Trains?

Since May 2015, London Overground has operated the trains on this line. London Overground is a train service that runs across many parts of London.

On the Romford–Upminster line, trains run twice every hour in both directions. This means you can catch a train about every 30 minutes. The journey from one end of the line to the other takes about nine minutes.

Even though London Overground runs the service, this line is completely separate from the rest of the London Overground network. It's like its own little railway island!
