Ron Jones: A Baseball Player's Story

Early Life and Baseball Start

Ron Jones was born in Seguin, Texas. He was first chosen by baseball teams in 1982 and 1983. However, he decided not to become a professional player right away. In 1984, he finally signed with the Philadelphia Phillies as a free agent. This means he was not drafted but could sign with any team.

Playing in the Minor Leagues

Ron was an outfielder. He sometimes struggled with his weight and injuries. But he showed amazing hitting skills in the Phillies' farm system. The farm system is where young players develop their skills. His strong hitting and good defense helped him earn a spot. Soon, he was ready to play with the main team.

Time in Major League Baseball

Ron started playing for the Philadelphia Phillies in August 1988. He had a great start in his first few months. But in April 1989, he suffered a major injury. He tore a tendon in his knee. This was the first of two serious knee injuries. The second injury happened in June 1990. This time, it was to his other knee.

Ron worked hard to come back from both injuries. However, his time playing in the major leagues was almost over. Even so, he kept playing baseball. He played in minor leagues, in Mexico, and in Taiwan. He also played in independent leagues and semi-pro games until the year 2000.

Life After Playing Baseball

After he stopped playing, Ron Jones became a hitting instructor. He coached young baseball players. He even started his own batting academy in Houston, Texas. He opened the "Big League Batting Academy" with another former major league player, Charlie Hayes.

In June 2006, Ron did not show up at the academy for a few days. He was later found at his home. It is believed he passed away due to a natural health issue.
