Ronald William McLarty (born April 26, 1947 – died February 8, 2020) was an American actor, writer, and storyteller. He was known for acting in many TV shows and movies. He also wrote plays and books.
Ron McLarty was also a very talented audiobook narrator. This means he read books aloud for people to listen to. He recorded over 100 audiobooks and won many awards for his work. One of his most famous books was The Memory of Running.

Ron McLarty's Career
Ron McLarty started his acting career in the early 1970s. He performed in plays on stage, including a show called Moonchildren in Washington, D.C. This play later moved to Broadway, which is a famous theater area in New York City.
He also acted in a TV show called Spenser: For Hire. In this show, he played a detective named Sgt. Frank Belson.
Even though he was a successful actor, Ron McLarty had trouble getting his novel, The Memory of Running, published. But then, a famous writer named Stephen King found an audiobook version of the story. Ron McLarty himself had narrated this audiobook. Stephen King loved the book so much that he called it "the best book you can't read."
Because of Stephen King's praise, the book was finally published. It quickly became a bestseller, meaning many people bought and read it.
Ron McLarty was a great narrator. Besides his own book, he read many other audiobooks. These included Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson and Decision Points by former U.S. President George W. Bush.
Ron McLarty went to Rhode Island College and graduated in 1969. Later, in 2007, he gave a speech at the college's graduation ceremony. He also received a special degree called a Doctor of Humanities.
Later Life and Passing
Ron McLarty passed away on February 8, 2020. He had been living with dementia since 2014.
