Rondon Pacheco (born July 31, 1919 – died July 4, 2016) was an important Brazilian politician. He served as the Chief of Staff for President Artur da Costa e Silva from 1967 to 1969. Later, from 1971 to 1975, he was the Governor of his home state, Minas Gerais.

About Rondon Pacheco
Rondon Pacheco was born in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, on July 31, 1919. He studied law at the Federal University of Minas Gerais. He once said that a speech he gave there in 1943 made him interested in politics.
Starting His Political Career
In 1947, Pacheco was elected to the state Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais. He was a member of the National Democratic Union (UDN) party. Three years later, in 1950, he was elected to the federal Chamber of Deputies in Rio de Janeiro. At that time, Rio de Janeiro was still the capital city of Brazil.
Important Roles in Government
President Artur da Costa e Silva chose Pacheco to be his Chief of Staff. This important job lasted from March 1967 to October 1969. The Chief of Staff is a main helper to the Brazilian president and part of the president's team, called the Cabinet of Brazil.
Later, President Emílio Garrastazu Médici appointed Pacheco as the Governor of Minas Gerais. He served as Governor from 1971 to 1975. During his time as Governor, in 1973, the state government made a deal with Fiat Automobiles. This agreement led to Fiat opening a car factory in the city of Betim, near Belo Horizonte. The Fiat factory started making cars in 1976.
Later Life and Legacy
Rondon Pacheco joined the Democratic Social Party (PDS) in 1976. He supported Tancredo Neves in the 1985 presidential election. Pacheco left politics in 1986 after trying to win a seat in the Federal Senate, but he was not successful.
A documentary film about Pacheco's life, called Algodão entre Espelhos, was released in 2012.
Rondon Pacheco passed away in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, on July 4, 2016, at the age of 96. He was survived by his wife, Marina de Freitas Pacheco, and his two daughters, Vera and Maria Vitória. His funeral was held in Uberlândia.
