Geography of Roosevelt

Roosevelt covers an area of about 34.5 square miles (89.4 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 34.4 square miles (89.1 square kilometers), is land. A small part, 0.1 square miles (0.3 square kilometers), is water.

History of Roosevelt

Early Surveys and Land Description

In 1847, a team from the U.S. government began to map the area that would become Roosevelt. They measured the outer edges of a six-mile-square section of land. Later, in 1854, another team marked all the corners of smaller sections within this area. They walked through forests and swamps, using tools like chains and compasses to measure.

After their work, the surveyor described the land. He said the ground was mostly uneven and the soil was not very rich. The main trees were hemlock, with some scattered white pine that wasn't of great quality. He noted that many small streams flowed through the area, but there were no settlers living there yet.

Logging and Railroads

Around the year 1900, large logging companies owned most of the land in what would become Roosevelt. The Northwestern Lumber Company owned the biggest parts, especially in the southern half. The Chippewa Lumber and Boom Co. also owned large sections in the north. Maps from that time show a special dam on the Eau Claire River used for logging. No homes or farms were shown on these maps yet.

Big changes started around 1905. The J.S. Owen Company built a railroad line for the Wisconsin Central Railway. This line went northwest through the town, heading towards Ladysmith and Superior. In the same year, the Taylor County Board officially created the Town of Roosevelt. It was separated from an older, larger town called Little Black.

From Logging to Farming

By 1911, a new map of Roosevelt showed the Wisconsin Central/Soo Line railroad crossing the town. It passed through Lublin. From Lublin, the Owen Lumber Company had a special logging track that went to Diamond Lake and beyond. A road also went west from Lublin, which is now County F.

Many farms in Roosevelt were carved out of choppy, rocky ground.

The map also showed that the southwest part of the town was becoming settled with many farms. Many of the families living there had Polish names. There were two schools in this area and one in Lublin. Another settled area was northeast of Lublin. These settlements around Lublin were the largest groups of farmers in western Taylor County at that time. Most of the rest of the town was still owned by lumber companies or land companies. This shows that the area was changing from a place mainly for logging to a place for farming.
