Roque Esteban Scarpa Straboni (born March 26, 1914, in Punta Arenas; died January 11, 1995, in Santiago) was an important Chilean writer, literary critic, and scholar. He won the Chilean National Prize for Literature in 1980, which is a very important award for writers in Chile. His family had roots in Croatia and Italy.

Who Was Roque Scarpa?

Roque Scarpa was a professor of literature at the University of Chile. He was also a key member of the Chilean Academy of Language. This organization helps protect and study the Spanish language in Chile.

In 1943, he started the Teatro de Ensayo (Experimental Theater) at the Catholic University of Chile. This theater group helped new plays and actors get started. He also worked as the director of the National Library of Chile for several years. This library is a very important place for books and history in Chile.

Scarpa also wrote about books and literature for newspapers. He shared his ideas in El Mercurio and La Aurora.
