Rory Clegg (born 6 January 1990) is a former professional rugby union player from England. He was known for playing as a Fly-half, a key position in rugby. Rory played for several top clubs during his career, including Newcastle Falcons and Harlequins. He also represented England at various youth levels.

Early Life and Rugby Start

Rory Clegg was born on January 6, 1990, in Hanover, Germany. His father was serving in the army there at the time.

Rory started playing rugby when he was 10 years old. He played for Darlington RFC and attended Barnard Castle School in County Durham. At school, he was part of the first team, coached by Martin Pepper, who used to play for Harlequins. Rory also played for County Durham and the North of England in different age groups.

Rory's Rugby Journey

Rory Clegg had a very successful start to his rugby career. By the time he turned 21 in 2011, he had already played for England at three different levels: under-16, under-18, and under-20. He also played in 25 matches in the Guinness Premiership, which is a top rugby league.

Playing for England Saxons

In 2011, Rory made his debut for the England Saxons team. This team is for players who are just below the main England national team. He played in the Churchill Cup, where he showed off his excellent kicking skills.

  • In one match against the USA, he successfully kicked 11 out of 13 conversions, helping his team win 87–8.
  • Against Tonga, he kicked all seven of his attempts, even though it was windy and rainy.
  • In the Churchill Cup final against Canada, Rory was named "man of the match" for his great performance.

Rory also played for England's under-20 team in the IRB Junior World Championships in Japan (2009) and Argentina (2010). He traveled a lot for rugby, going to places like New Zealand, Australia, and Japan with his school and England teams.

Club Career Highlights

Rory Clegg began his professional club career with the Newcastle Falcons when he was 18. He stepped in for the famous player Jonny Wilkinson, who was injured. In his first game, he kicked three penalty goals, showing his talent early on.

In 2009, Rory moved to Harlequins. He made his first start for them in a big match in front of a huge crowd. In that game, he kicked a penalty goal from the halfway line in the final minute, helping his team get a 9–9 draw.

He was also a replacement player for Harlequins when they won the 2011–12 Premiership final. Rory played over 50 games for Harlequins and scored more than 270 points.

Moving to Other Clubs

After his contract with Newcastle Falcons ended in 2015, Rory joined the Glasgow Warriors for a short time. This was to help the team when many of their main players were away for the Rugby World Cup.

In November 2015, Rory moved to France to play for Oyonnax in the Top-14 league. He then returned to the Glasgow Warriors in 2016.

In 2017, Rory Clegg joined Ealing Trailfinders, where he played until the end of that season.
