Early Life and Circus Start
Rosalie Van Been was born in Ixelles, Belgium, on December 21, 1910. She started her circus career when she was still a teenager. She worked with big cats, like lions and tigers. People called her the "Queen" of the French and European circus. She was also seen as the "doyenne," meaning the most respected and experienced woman in the circus world.
Her Amazing Performances
Rosa Bouglione began performing when she was a child. She was famous for her "serpentine" dance. In this act, she danced in a special way, similar to the dancer Loie Fuller. What made it truly amazing was that she performed this dance inside a cage full of lions!
A Unique Wedding
In 1928, Rosa married Joseph Bouglione. He was a skilled cat trainer. Joseph later became a legendary circus owner and director. Their wedding was very unusual and memorable. They got married right inside a lions' cage!
Sharing Her Story
In 2011, Rosa Bouglione wrote a book about her life. It was called Un mariage dans la cage aux lions: la grande saga du cirque Bouglione. This title means "A wedding in the lions' cage: the great saga of the Bouglione circus." The book shared many stories from her long and exciting life.
Later Years and Legacy
Even in her very old age, "Madame Rosa," as she was often called, remained active. She had a large family, including seven children. She also had 53 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rosa Bouglione lived to be 107 years old. She passed away on August 26, 2018, in her apartment. Her apartment was located at the Cirque d'Hiver in Paris, a famous circus building.
Her funeral was a special event held in the circus ring of the Cirque d'Hiver. This happened on August 29, 2018. She was buried in the Bouglione family's tomb. This tomb is located in the cemetery of Lizy-sur-Ourcq, a town near Paris.
