Rosa Giacinta Badalla facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Rosa Giacinta Badalla was an Italian composer who lived a long time ago, from about 1660 to 1710. She was also a Benedictine nun, which means she was a woman who dedicated her life to God and lived in a special religious community called a monastery.

We first learned about her from records at the Saint Radegonda monastery in Milan, Italy, in 1678. Other famous women composers like Claudia Sessa, Claudia Rusca, and Chiara Margarita Cozzolani also worked in convents in Milan around the same time.

What Kind of Music Did Rosa Badalla Write?

Rosa Badalla wrote different types of music, and some of it was even printed!

Her Only Printed Music Book

She had one book of her music printed in 1684 in Venice. It was called Motetti a voce sola. A motet is a type of short religious song, and "a voce sola" means it was written for a single singer.

Music experts say this book of solo motets was special. It showed off how well a singer could perform, had new and interesting musical ideas, and proved that Rosa Badalla was a very skilled composer.

Other Surviving Songs

Besides her printed book, two other songs she wrote have survived until today. These are called cantatas, which are like short stories told through music.

  • Vuò cercando (written around 1680)
  • O fronde care (written around 1695)

Rosa Badalla didn't just write the music for these two cantatas; she also wrote the words (the text) for them!
