About Rosa María Mateo
Rosa María Mateo's father was a soldier. Because of his job, her family moved around a lot when she was little. They lived in places like Burgos, Madrid, and Valencia.
In Valencia, she started studying law. Back then, it was unusual for girls to study law, and there were only a few female students in her class. She also discovered her love for theater during this time. Later, she earned degrees in Law and Journalism from the Complutense University of Madrid. She also studied Political Science and acting. Since the 1990s, she has been with Spanish actor Miguel Rellán.
Her Career in Television
In 1963, Rosa María Mateo began her career as an announcer for Radio Nacional de España, which is Spain's national radio station. By 1966, she moved to Spanish television, joining the news team.
She first worked on a TV channel called La 2, which was known as UHF at the time. She appeared on programs like La segunda cadena informa in 1968. In the early 1970s, she moved to La 1 and joined the news show Buenas tardes.
Becoming a Famous News Anchor
Her popularity grew in 1972 when she was chosen to host the first OTI Festival, a big music event. She became even more famous when she joined the respected news program Informe Semanal in 1974, where she stayed until 1980.
People called her "the Muse of the Transition" because of her important role during Spain's move to democracy. After an attempted coup d'état (a sudden takeover of the government) on February 23, 1981, all political parties agreed that Rosa María Mateo should be the one to read the official statement condemning the event.
She also presented the main news program, Telediario, until 1993. That year, she moved to another TV channel, Antena 3, to host their weekend news program, Antena 3 Noticias. She worked there until 2003, when her contract ended.
Recognition and Awards
A report from 1990 by the University of La Laguna found that Rosa María Mateo was the most popular TV host at RTVE. She has also spoken out about how TV news often treats women.
In 2010, she received the Gold Medal of Merit for Work from the Spanish government. In 2011, she publicly supported a political candidate, Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, during the general elections.
In 2013, she planted a tree with her name in the Communication Park in Boiro, which is a special park created by journalists. She also received an honorary award there for her long and successful career. In April 2014, she made a small appearance in the TV series Rescatando a Sara.
Leading RTVE
In 2018, there were some difficulties in choosing a new leader for RTVE. So, on July 19, 2018, the new government led by Pedro Sánchez suggested Rosa María Mateo for a temporary position. She became the "sole administrator" of RTVE. This meant she would lead the public company until a new permanent leader and board could be chosen through a public process.
Her appointment was approved on July 27, 2018, by the Spanish Parliament. She officially started her role on July 30. She served as the head of RTVE until March 26, 2021, when a new permanent leader, José Manuel Pérez Tornero, was appointed.
