Rosalie Fish facts for kids
Rosalie Fish is a talented runner who is part of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe, a Native American tribe. She used to be a student athlete at Iowa Central Community College and the University of Washington. When she was in her last year at Muckleshoot Tribal Schools, Rosalie became well-known around the world. She painted a red handprint over her mouth. The fingers went across her cheeks. She did this to honor and remember missing and murdered Indigenous women. Rosalie Fish has also been a special speaker for Tedx Talks.
Honoring Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW)
Rosalie Fish used her running to bring attention to a very important issue. She dedicated her races at the 2019 Washington State 1B track and field championships to MMIW. MMIW stands for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. It is a movement to highlight the violence that many Indigenous women face.
At the track meet, Rosalie wore a painted red handprint over her mouth. She also wrote the letters MMIW on her leg. She was inspired by another runner named Jordan Marie Daniel. Jordan is from the Kul Wicasa Oyate/Lower Brule Indian Reservation in South Dakota. Jordan first wore a handprint across her face during the Boston Marathon in April 2019.
Championship Achievements
Rosalie Fish is a very successful college distance runner. She won two National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship titles. She also earned 11 All-American awards. These awards mean she was one of the best college athletes in the country.
Rosalie helped her teams achieve many great things. In 2023, she helped the Washington Huskies win the Pac-12 Conference Cross Country Championships. Her team also placed 3rd at the 2021 NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships. They won the 2020 NJCAA Region XI Championships. They placed 2nd at the 2020 NJCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. And they won the 2019 NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships.
